It’s happening again – you feel a faint throbbing sensation behind your eyes. You know it’s just a matter of time before that dull ache evolves into a debilitating, and sometimes vomit-inducing, migraine or headache. You resolve that your plans will need to be put on hold until the pain passes. You vow to find a permanent solution to this never-ending cycle of pain.

Headaches: What You Need to Know
Headaches and migraines are common for a large majority of the population. Nine out of 10 Americans report that they suffer from occasional or frequent headaches, and it is estimated that around 13 percent of American adults suffer from migraines. The most common kind of headache is a tension headache. Tension headaches present with a dull pain and pressure around the forehead, the sides of the head, or the back of the head. Migraine headaches are far more severe and can leave a sufferer completely incapacitated. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea and/or vomiting, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light. There is an array of treatments for headaches and migraines and many sufferers find that what works for one individual may not work for another. Unless there is a neurological deficiency or malignancy, anything from over-the-counter medications, to herbal supplements, to simply waiting for the pain to pass are all used as treatment options. Another common and effective treatment for headaches and migraines is chiropractic care.

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches that originate in the neck and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headaches than a commonly prescribed medication.

Chiropractic Treatment: Headaches and Migraines
While there is a variety of reasons as to why you could be suffering from a headache or migraine, chiropractors focus on trauma, toxins, and emotional triggers. A car accident, for example, would indicate trauma. Exposure to food additives, alcohol, or pesticides would indicate that the headaches may be caused by toxins. Finally, mental factors like anxiety, depression, and/or stress could point towards headaches caused by emotional triggers. All three points of focus can contribute to or cause subluxations (or misalignments) in the spine. These subluxations can be the result of acute injuries like whiplash following an accident, chronic injuries like poor posture, and/or anxiety or depression that cause teeth clenching.

At Centro Chiropractic Clinic, we treat your headache and migraine problems by addressing the source of your pain. After giving you a thorough examination and discussing your medical history with you, treatment for headaches or migraines will typically include spinal adjustments and/or massage therapy with the goal of bringing the vertebrae back into correct alignment in order to relieve pinched nerves and overall pain.

What Can I Do to Alleviate My Symptoms?
In addition to regular spinal manipulation, tweaking your daily habits so that they are more “spine friendly” can do wonders for the body as whole. Here are a few suggestions for those who suffer from regular headaches or migraines and who have not been diagnosed with an underlying disorder or disease:

  • If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer or on a sewing machine, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.
  • If you work in an office or are a student, ensure that your desk, chair, and computer monitor are ergonomically-friendly. Your computer monitor should be an arm’s length away and should be slightly below your horizontal optical axis. Your keyboard and mouse should be in line with your elbows, and your knees and elbows should be at a right angle. Finally, your feet should be placed firmly on the floor; if your feet cannot touch the floor, a foot stool can be used.
  • Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics.
  • Avoid teeth clenching. The upper teeth should never touch the lower teeth, except when swallowing. This results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches. If you find that you clench your teeth while you sleep, speak to your dentist about wearing a nightguard.
  • Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.

People often mistakenly assume that chiropractic care is only suitable for treating spinal conditions such as back and neck pain.  However, chiropractic care focuses on the treatment of joint misalignment throughout the body. Although this field is primarily concerned with spinal health, there is no denying that issues with the spinal column can adversely affect other areas of the body.  This should come as no surprise since the spine is responsible for protecting the spinal cord, which is the main conduit for passing messages between the brain and all of the nerves in the body!

When you’re suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, you might not immediately think to visit a chiropractor, but the professionals at Centro Chiropractic Clinic are uniquely qualified to help you treat this painful and restrictive condition.  What is carpal tunnel syndrome and how is it treated with the aid of chiropractic care and support services?

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, is a condition that affects the median nerve, which runs from the upper arm, near the shoulder, down into the hand, controlling movement and sensation in the thumb and all of the fingers except the pinkie.  This is the only nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel, a passage in the wrist consisting of bones and ligaments. When the carpal tunnel becomes swollen and inflamed, it can put pressure on the median nerve, resulting in a variety of symptoms.  One of the first symptoms patients with CTS often experience is a feeling of numbness and tingling, or the sensation that the fingers have “fallen asleep”.  You may notice this sensation particularly when you’ve been sleeping, and you first wake up.  Pain, itching, and burning sensations are also common, and may extend up the arm.

In time, weakness could develop, especially related to grip strength and the ability to pinch the thumb and fingers together.  Muscle cramps and pain could become prevalent, along with ongoing pain, loss of feeling in the fingers, and slowed nerve impulses.  Over time, muscle damage and loss of function in the hand could become permanent, so it’s important to seek diagnosis and treatment immediately when you start to experience symptoms of CTS.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Several factors could contribute to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome.  Some people simply have smaller carpal tunnel structures that are more prone to irritating the median nerve.  You may suffer some kind of trauma or injury that causes swelling and irritation.  Diseases and disorders like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, an overactive pituitary gland, or hypothyroidism could also be to blame, as could fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause.
Many people also suffer from repetitive motion injuries related to their occupations.  Carpal tunnel syndrome is not uncommon for people who sit at a computer, toggling a mouse and typing on a keyboard all day.  Use of vibrating hand tools could also lead to irritation, inflammation, and swelling, as could any number of repetitive motions, especially in cases where the hand is positioned below the wrist.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?
When you visit the specialists at Centro Chiropractic Clinic, the first steps will include discussing your medical history and performing an examination (and possibly testing like x-rays) to formulate a diagnosis.  From there, our team of chiropractors and support specialists will devise a personalized treatment plan to alleviate the pain and other symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, prevent further damage, and help you regain full use of your hand. This could include not only chiropractic adjustments, but also soft tissue treatments like massage, corrective exercises to improve strength, and lifestyle advice related to ergonomic solutions that could help to prevent further irritation and harm.  Best of all, these treatments can be used in concert with other therapies (such as anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery), or possibly as an alternative to pharmaceutical and invasive surgical interventions.

If you suspect you’re developing carpal tunnel syndrome, early diagnosis and treatment can  alleviate pain and prevent permanent damage.  If you are suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Centro Chiropractic Clinic can help.

Here at Centro Chiropractic, our physicians are focused on alleviating pain and discomfort associated with injuries, including those which are a result of a sports injury.  Our chiropractors encourage athletes and active individuals to come into our clinics for regular adjustments to help maintain a healthy spine and prevent the possibility of developing more serious injuries in the future.  Unfortunately, sports injuries can occur but when they do, chiropractic care can help.

One of our chiropractors will conduct a complete assessment to determine the underlying cause of pain and other symptoms associated with the injury.  The consultation may include a physical analysis, as well as X-rays.  Once a diagnosis is made, we will come up with a treatment plan to encourage proper alignment of the disc and vertebrae, which can become displaced when jolted by a collision during athletic activity.

In addition to chiropractic adjustments we may also recommend other non-invasive therapies to help manage your symptoms. One such therapy we may use is massage therapy.  Massage therapy is used to help relax your muscles and release toxins that may cause you to have a limited range of motion.  Patients who use massage therapy in combination with chiropractic treatment often experience less muscle soreness and often times heal faster after chiropractic treatment sessions.

In addition to massage therapy your treatment might include physiotherapy to improve your range of motion and help manage any pain you may be experiencing.  Physiotherapy consists of exercises that challenge the muscles and joints in specific movements, which over time may facilitate faster healing, as well as provide relief from pain associated with your injury.
